Turkey
Tourism in Turkey is largely based on a variety of historical sites and coastal resorts along its Aegean and Mediterranean shores. Turkey has also become a popular destination for culture, spa experiences, and medical care.
The peak year for tourism in Turkey was 2014, when it attracted around 42 million foreign tourists, making it the sixth most popular tourist destination in the world. However, this number dropped to approximately 36 million in 2015 and about 25 million in 2016. Fortunately, the number of tourists began to recover in 2017, increasing to 32 million foreign visitors, and reaching 39.5 million in 2018.
Antalya is considered the tourist capital of Turkey. Some of the largest resort cities include Bodrum, Fethiye, Marmaris, Kuşadası, Çeșme, Didim, and Alanya. Additionally, Turkey was ranked second in the world in 2015, with 436 beaches receiving the Blue Flag award, according to the Chamber of Shipping.
In 2022, Turkey was positioned third in the ranking of the largest tourism markets in the world.
